Frequently asked questions
Do I need an appointment?
Yes. Taxpayer Assistance Centers see taxpayers by appointment only. Call 844-545-5640, Monday to Friday, 7 AM to 7 PM local time. The only thing you can do without one is pick up blank forms. See the appointment guide.
What should I bring?
Always: a current government photo ID and your Social Security number or ITIN. Then whatever the reason for the visit requires — the letter you received, the return in question, W-2s, a completed W-7 or 2290. Full checklist for Winston-Salem.
Can I pay my taxes here?
By check or money order payable to United States Treasury. This office does not accept cash. Most payments are faster through irs.gov/payments. Payment plans and paying in person.
Can I get an ITIN here?
Yes. This office authenticates original documents for Form W-7 during a scheduled appointment, so your passport is returned on the spot instead of mailed. ITIN guide.
Can I do this online instead?
Very often, yes. Transcripts, IP PINs, payment plans, balance checks and most account questions are available in your IRS Online Account without a visit. In-person is needed mainly for ITIN document authentication, 5747C identity verification, cash payments and same-day Form 2290 stamping.
What if I don't speak English?
The IRS provides interpreter services in most languages at no cost. Mention the language you need when booking through 844-545-5640 so an interpreter is arranged for the appointment.
