IRS Office Visit Guide

How to get a tax transcript from the IRS

Online in minutes, by mail in ten days, or in person the same day. Which transcript type you need for a mortgage, FAFSA, immigration or an audit.

5 min read

A transcript is the IRS's own summary of your return or account. Lenders, colleges, USCIS and state agencies ask for it because it comes straight from the IRS rather than from you. Most people can get one online in under ten minutes; a TAC visit only makes sense if online access fails.

Fastest route: sign in to your IRS Online Account, open "Tax Records" and download the transcript as a PDF. Free, instant, available for the current year and several prior years.

Option 1: Online

Create or sign in to your IRS Online Account. Identity verification runs through ID.me and takes a photo ID plus a selfie. Once inside, every transcript type is available immediately.

Option 2: By mail

Use "Get Transcript by Mail" on irs.gov or call the automated line at 800-908-9946. Only Return and Account transcripts are available this way, and only for the address on your latest return. Allow five to ten calendar days.

Option 3: Form 4506-T

Mail or fax Form 4506-T to request any transcript type, including sending it directly to a third party. Turnaround is around ten business days. This is the route when your address has changed and online verification will not work.

Option 4: In person at a TAC

Book an appointment through 844-545-5640, bring a photo ID and your taxpayer number, and the representative prints the transcript while you wait. Useful when you are locked out of the online system, need it today, or need one for a deceased taxpayer or a business.

Which one does my lender want?

Almost always the Tax Return Transcript for the last two years. If you amended a return, they may ask for the Record of Account so they can see both versions. Ask them to be specific before you request.

Frequently asked questions

How far back can I go?

Return transcripts: current year plus three prior. Account transcripts: much further, typically ten years online. Wage and Income: ten years.

Why does my transcript say "No record of return filed"?

Either the return has not finished processing (allow two to three weeks after e-filing, six to eight after paper), or it was filed under a different taxpayer number. A TAC can check both.

Can I get a transcript for someone else?

Only with Form 2848 or 8821 on file, or as the court-appointed representative of an estate with the appointment papers in hand.
